Bloomfield city officials, employees and citizens attended the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon for the East Blanco Bridge. The project will replace the old bridge that served as U.S. Highway 64 since about 1992, when the current highway to the south was built.
“So you all know that this project is a long time coming, beginning in 2005 before I was the mayor, and we knew it's just been an ongoing issue over and over,” Bloomfield mayor Cynthia Atencio said in her opening statement. “We're so glad to see this project finally come to be.”
The first funding for the East Blanco Bridge for replacement was received Dec. 31, 2017, from legislative appropriations in the amount of $208,853 for preliminary engineering, she said. Over the past seven years, funding has been sought and received, and an award of $3,730,550 was recently made to FNF Construction of Tempe, Arizona.
