Navajo Technical University is one of the premier tribal college and universities in the nation, offering of blend of technical education with advanced degrees in Diné culture and language and STEM fields. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and holds program accreditation with ABET, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Culinary Federation, and the National Center for Construction Education and Research.
NTU’s main campus is located in Crownpoint, NM, but it maintains instructional sites in Chinle and Teec Nos Pos, AZ and Kirtland and Zuni, NM. Each site provides access to higher education opportunities to communities throughout the Four Corners region.
COVID-19 uprooted education across the nation as many institutions switched learning online. NTU is function in a hybrid learning environment that blends online and face-to-face learning. The transition to hybrid has allowed NTU to improve its IT infrastructure, while providing safety measures for in person learning at NTU learning facilities.
Hands on education is stressed in NTU’s technical and career trade programs; however, all students must take basic English and Mathematics courses to fulfill program requirements. NTU’s Automotive Technology is offered as a certificate and associate degree.
NTU offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. A new Wet Labs facility on our Crownpoint campus accommodates the program and student research projects. The program currently partners with Harvard University under a National Science Foundation Partnership for Research and Education in Materials project.
Culinary Arts was one of the foundational programs established at NTU in 1979 when it was known as the Crownpoint Skills Center. NTU’s Culinary Arts and Baking programs are accredited by the American Culinary Federation.
NTU offers one of the lowest tuition rates in the nation as an open enrollment institution. Tribally enrolled students are able to earn a degree at $71.25 per credit hour, while non-tribal students can earn a degree at $142.50 per credit.
The Navajo Nation has some of the nation’s highest rates for diabetes, heart conditions, and other factors that impact healthy lifestyles. NTU offers a certificate in Nursing Assistant and is working at reviving its RN program. The programs are pathways to careers in healthcare, but also to NTU’s four-year degree program in Biology.
Navajo Technical University offers two master’s degrees, 13 baccalaureate degrees, 21 associate degrees, and 23 certificates. GED/ABE education courses are also offered.
NTU offers a Bachelor and Master of Arts degree in Diné Culture, Language & Leadership. It is the role of NTU as a tribal university to embed culture and language across all facets of operations in accordance to the Diné Philosophy of Education.
The student to faculty ratio at NTU is 13:1. Over 50 percent of NTU’s faculty is Native American while 28 hold a PHD or EDD.
